"Aging Workforce Offers Opportunities and Requires Special Considerations"
Swift Currie attorney K. Martine Cumbermack authored an article published by WorkersCompensation.com discussing how an “Aging Workforce Offers Opportunities and Requires Special Considerations.”
Generation X and Baby Boomers are the fastest-growing generations in the workforce and tend to have lower injury rates than younger employees but tend to have more severe conditions when injuries occur. When older employees are injured, they tend to need longer leave times, are less likely to be offered light-duty or modified work, less likely to be recommended rehabilitation and less likely to fully return to work when compared to younger workers.
Employers should consider how workplace dynamics, productivity, safety and the overall number of incidents of workplace injuries can be improved by addressing general health and safety practices, workplace accommodations, training and development programs, health and wellness programs and legal and compliance considerations for the aging workplace demographic.
“Embracing proactive strategies that promote health, safety, productivity and work accommodations will enable employers to harness the full potential of their aging workforce, while also minimizing the incidences of workplace injuries when navigating the challenges inherent in a work injury involving an older worker,” recommends Cumbermack.
